Annual Sand Sculpture Contest
August 1, 2018
10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Grab your pails, shovels and other sand castle tools and get ready to compete in Edgartown’s annual Sand Sculpture Contest. At 10 a.m., construction begins, followed by judging at 2 p.m., then an award presentation at 3 p.m. Guests can enjoy some amazing works of art! Sponsored by the Edgartown Board of Trade & The Winnetu Oceanside Resort, this family-friendly event is open to everyone. Admission is $5. The entrance is at the Left Fork of South Beach.
21st Annual Summer Artisans Festivals
West Tisbury Grange Hall
August 2, 2018
10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Experience this summer tradition on Martha’s Vineyard—the only weekly juried art show where the public can meet and buy from over 70 artisans. There will be several demonstrations, including painting, pottery and more. Discover the works of the most amazing local artists, including weaving, fine furniture, stained glass, quilts, sea glass windows, oil and pastel paintings, mixed media, wampum jewelry, handmade books and so much more. There will also be great food. Admission is free, as well as parking. There’s also a playground for the kids. So bring the whole family and discover truly incredible art in all of its many forms!
David Sedaris on Martha’s Vineyard
August 8-10, 2018
The Martha’s Vineyard Concert Series presents an evening with one of America’s most prominent humor writers. Pieces that feature his sardonic wit and insightful social commentary have appeared in The New Yorker and have twice been featured in “The Best American Essays.” Sedaris is the author of many best-selling collections of personal essays, including Naked, Me Talk Pretty One Day, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, and Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary. It’s sure to be an entertaining night! This event is from 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. at the Old Whaling Church.
22nd Annual Built on Stilts Dance Festival
August 9-11 and 18-21, 2018
This dance festival features the work of professional artists from the island, Boston, New York, Washington, D.C. and beyond. The festival includes live music, theater, poetry readings, storytelling, comedy, circus acts and much more! All shows are free to the public and all ages are welcome. No tickets or reservations are required. Come and go as you please. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the event will begin with drumming, dancers warming up and a stilting demonstration outside. Performances begin at 8 p.m.
